SMALL UNIVERSE

SMALL UNIVERSE

The universe is folding in on itself
The universe has become too small
There are far too many coincidences
Sometimes I can't seem to cope with them all

A man comes a knocking on a dark evening's door
Asking if it's all right to park his big car out there
He has a face which I'm sure that I've seen before
Who says that he also knows me from somewhere

Nonplussed for a moment I admit this seems true
I stutter and mutter that I think so - possibly - yes
He says it'll come to you before it comes to me
And with that he drifts back into the darkness

The universe is folding in on itself
The universe has become too small
There are far too many coincidences
Some days I can't seem to cope with them all

Names and their faces were never my strong suit
I'm still not certain but if I have to I'll take a guess
Whilst furiously fearfully filtering a mental card index
I'm sorry but did you maybe once work for - Barcrest?

A dark decade long past I struggled through there
Until I escaped without any plans to look back
Now someone from then lives just through the wall
Life seems to be enforcing some mental backtrack

The universe is folding in on itself
The universe has become too small
There are far too many coincidences
Sometimes I don't seem to cope with them all

Despite astonishing shock I stagger back inside
One small coincidence I possibly could handle
But this is another - and far too close to home
Though - thank the lord - he isn't called Randall

For this is the second - perhaps I need to explain
My job was transferred to a company that's new
By strange quirks of destiny and cruel twists of fate
Turned out the new boss was once a Barcrest person too

The universe is folding in on itself
The universe has become too small
There are far too many coincidences
These days I can't seem to cope with them all
