DAWNING GLOOM

DAWNING GLOOM

The time of year for dawning morning gloom is here
Our home is still held in the grip of the deep dark night
Heading downwards to jump-start another shift in time
Probing and feeling the way as the coming day breaks

The brightest autumnal stars which pin-point the sky
Modestly hidden by the cool earth’s slate-grey blanket
The Hunter flings them all aside to stand erect and proud
Blazing Betelgeuse still burning at his broad shoulder

Flickers of blue bright bring promises of imminent dawn
Still, the coldest crisp air awaits us as we embark upon
Another morning’s duplication of yesterday’s rat run
Our breath clouds visibly - still to be warmed by the sun

Ascending the hill to morning’s pausing thinking spot
Artful sky painters are still setting up their palettes
The show’s star’s still making up beyond the curtains
Grey and gloom can never truly satisfy as a warm-up act

Not to be disappointed shutterbugs stay hidden away,
As yet unmanifested majesty will remain uncaptured
Continuing on, not stopping to stare gloomily at the gloom
Soon - but too late - it will explode behind me blindingly
