NOSFERATUTU THE DANCYR

NOSFERATUTU THE DANCYR

So there you have it, after working for a long time as a graphic artist before suddenly finding myself with rather a lot of time on my hands in my mid-fifties, I've been pottering around writing stuff, drawing stuff, and recording stuff, for the past couple of years, mostly because I happen to be lucky enough to share my life with someone rather wonderful who has been very supportive of what I still think of as my silly creative nonsenses.

Just after New Year, having been inspired by a documentary I watched over Christmas, I Idly did a sketch - of what I thought was a slightly amusing idea - in my sketchbook and thought "Hang on..." as I realised that maybe, just maybe, this was a pretty good subject on which to hang a project that I'd been trying to get off the ground since around the time I got flung onto life's scrapheap a couple of Christmases earlier.

One long, bitter afternoon, back in November 2019, I'd had a thought that I might investigate what it took to put "A. Book." together, and went onto the self-publishing site Lulu to see if I could possibly work out how to do it.

Several hours later, and, despite having had a long career in the Graphic Arts, I walked away from their templates with my forehead bleeding from the frustration of having utterly failed to make any of it work properly and, as I've discovered in the intervening years, I was not alone in having this problem.

Two years passed, in which I continued making contributions to the ROUND THE ARCHIVES podcast, carried on working with ANDY PRIESTNER on the "AN A TO Z OF UK TV DRAMA" podcast and "SPACE SOLDIERS: A FLASH GORDON COMMENTARY PODCAST," as well as producing and presenting VISION ON SOUND for FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL (a digital radio station based in Manchester), and I continued scribbling in my sketchbooks and, more rarely, writing my poems, and this idea of creating "A. Book." of some sort had never really gone away.

So I sat down in front of my keyboard and wrote a 32 stanza poem which I thought might work quite well as the basis for this new project, and sat down with my pens and started scribbling and, after a few days, was able to put together a couple of pages and began to see that maybe, just maybe, I might be able to bring something together that, if I did it properly, might just be the master document I could use to return to that website and see whether I could finally figure out how to actually stagger across the finishing line and hit "publish" because, basically, it's a lot easier to figure out the details if you've actually got something tangible to upload to the site.

At this point I didn't ever expect to ever ACTUALLY publish it. The whole thing was just an exercise in teaching myself how to do something new.

This started to become known as the "not really a book" project, and I carried on working on the drawings, and I was generally finding that I was quite enjoying doing that, and, at one point, even felt brave enough to put out a "teaser" image that suggested (with all my key ingredients still kept very secret) that I might be working on something new to the kind and lovely crowd with whom I engage in the allegedly big bad online community.

Two months passed and, eventually, the artwork part was - I thought - finished, and a first draft had been put together and, after several frustrating attempts, I managed to chip away at the necessary tolerances, and found myself with an acceptably formatted file, an ISBN number, and the possibility of ordering up a test print, because I still had no idea just how well a fully illustrated book might actually print using their processes.

I hit "print" and figured that would be the end of it.

After all, the entire point of the exercise had been accomplished; I had created and prepared something resembling "A. Book."  and sent it to print.

Then, overnight, I had a thought. One of the design concepts I'd had whilst creating the first draft had been to make the whole story look like a "Family Album" with the kind of borders you might find in those old Victorian photograph albums but, having hit "print" I suddenly hated that idea (which had taken a whole day to add to every page after I'd found the previous "ragged edge" style looked far too messy) and went back to the computer "just to see" how it looked with clean white margins instead.

Dammit. I thought it looked far better without.

Anyway, with that little hiccup out of the way, the test print arrived and I thought that it looked okay, and I shared a picture of it with TwitWorld, and nobody was saying it looked awful, or that it was a truly dreadful idea. There were, however, a few minor issues that I decided I really ought to deal with because, well, wouldn't it be nice if I actually made use of that ISBN number and maybe, just maybe, I could actually make my silly bit of nonsense available on the Lulu Bookstore...?

And whilst I tinkered, and procrastinated, and worried about the fact that I'm not really a "real" writer, I was reminded with a hearty "Well, what's the worst that can happen?" (Answer - I'm so humiliated that I crawl back under my rock and vow never to approach a keyboard, or a sketchbook, ever again) that I might as well hit "publish" - and so I did.

Of course I got something the wrong way around, and I still had to order myself that proof copy that Lulu insist upon for approval before allowing "World Distribution" (Yikes!) but, over the course of that terrifying Sunday, several very kind people decided to order it "sight unseen" as it were, because they were being supportive of me and my efforts, and so a tricky week followed in which I hadn't seen the finished product, and I still fully expected the ones which arrived at those people's homes to be greeted with hoots of derision of the "How dare he think that THIS was book-worthy?!" kind.

Anyway, on Friday the 25th of February, 2022, as the world was unravelling around us, that proof copy arrived, as did the dozen or so copies which had been ordered by those various households.

And they were all very kind and told me that they liked my work, which is always something of a relief. It’s difficult to explain how much it means when, as somebody who doesn’t think of themselves as a “real” writer, I put something (a poem I wrote and illustrated) “out there” for public scrutiny, and (so far anyway), people have not poured scorn or found it truly awful.

To be honest, the purpose of the exercise has been fulfilled. I have, as the saying goes, achieved all of the goals that I set myself. I never expected that there'd be any demand for many more than the twenty or so copies that I thought it might run to, and, to be honest, at least a dozen of those have been bought by the very same people I would probably have gifted them to if I'd had an actual income to afford to print that many for myself.

But NOSFERATUTU THE DANCYR, my silly bittersweet little story about loneliness and dancing, has made it out from the confines of my imagination into the real world, and I hope, at least, that some people enjoy it.

WESTMINSTER PALACE (AFTER A.A. MILNE) - 181221

WESTMINSTER PALACE (After A.A. Milne)

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
The country's in uproar because of that Boris
Except for the readers of Daily Express
"Who keep saying I'm a roaring success"
                                             Says Boris

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
All of their headlines are written by Boris
Boris has had his incompetence starred
"A Prime Minister's life is terribly hard"
                                             Says Boris

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace

Another big scandal involving that Boris
They still think he's great for acting the fool
"Underestimation is such a great tool"
                                             Says Boris

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
Even his own side don't think much of Boris
"I gave them big parties despite all the rules"
"Back then they all acted like they'd won the pools"
                                             Says Boris

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
Everything 'bout him is total artifice
"Alexander Boris dePfeffer Johnson's the name"
"But playing the ordinary Joes is this game"
                                             Says Boris

The unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
Lining his pockets and lying to your face
"It really doesn't matter how often I've lied"
"I really don't care how many have died"
                                             Says Boris

NEW VERSE!!!

The Unchanging old guard at Westminster Palace
Everything’s fine according to Boris
Ah, but what about that David Frost?
“There was nothing gained but then nothing lost”
                                             Says Boris

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

They seem to think it’s safe now
To draw those boundaries in
Wealth is all that counts these days
As wisdom gets flung into the bin

But we still don’t want to visit folk
Our summer break we’ve now cancelled
Quietly happy not to get involved
With gatherings neighbours held

We were quite happy here at home
Whilst little shops were safely shut
Weren’t bothered in the slightest
About getting our long hair cut

We just don’t want to barbecue
Or sit outside drinking warm wine
When it comes to life’s small pleasures
The sofa will do just fine

Not ones for pubs much anyway
Parties we simply can’t abide
To be frank we’re completely happy
To be ignoring the human tide

Don’t want to go down to the beach
Or drive any distance in the car
Whilst my inner voice is screaming
It’s still too dangerous by far

It’s fine if you want to do these things
I wouldn’t begrudge it you at all
Just respect my choice to not join in
From outside the asylum wall

We’ve needed our supermarket
Gone to a chemist from time to time
All wrapped up in our safety gear
Not like too many other swine

So enjoy your close proximity
Now you’ve been let out once again
It’s not about if there’s a second wave
But more about just when

SOLSTICE EVE MORNING

SOLSTICE EVE MORNING

Surrounded by song
Sung invisibly
From midsummer trees
Plump with vibrant leaves
Already rust flecked
As the year turns again

Morning birds seem rare
Landing scruffily
Some overnight rave
Kept them sleeping
Working not preening
Life keeping them busy

Two pair’s a good hand
In life’s poker game
But not so strong when
Four magpies in treetops
Flying so far so fast
To my distant wanders

Grey mornings roll along
So surprisingly
Bright shining moments
Of unexpected sunshine
As mist clenches its fist
And the year turns again

FUDGE & BUMBLE

FUDGE & BUMBLE

Fudge & bumble
Bumble & fudge
Deflect the story
With an unwise nudge

Bumble & fudge
Fudge & bumble
Don’t expect numbers
To start to tumble

Fog & bluster
Bluster & fog
We need digital
You're still analogue

Bluster & fog

Fog & bluster
Why not admit
It's a total cluster

Fudge & bumble
Bumble & fudge
You know what’s needed
Why don’t you budge

Bumble & fudge
Fudge & bumble
We think you’re
A total dumbbell

Fog & bluster

Bluster & fog
More of a poodle
Than a British bulldog

Bluster & fog

Fog & bluster
Despite what you think
You're simply lacklustre

NOT EVERYONE

NOT EVERYONE

Not everyone you like is always right
Not everything you read is always true
Sometimes something is not thought out
Sometimes something is not thought about
But that does not diminish you

Not everyone I like is always right
Not everything I read is always true
Sometimes it’s a falsehood quite persuasive
Some days I’m quite willing to be persuaded
But that should not empower you

Not everything you know is a proven fact
Not everything you read is knowledge backed
Some days an opinion isn’t so strong
Sometimes an opinion can be wrong
But that should not diminish you

Not everything I know is a proven fact
Not everything I read is knowledge backed
Some days my opinion isn’t so strong
Sometimes my opinion can be wrong
But that should not enable you

Not everyone need do what you say or do
Not everything I think will agree with you
Sometimes we simply must agree to differ
Some things might cause a row to trigger
But this does not diminish you

Not everyone need do what I say or do
Not everything I think will appeal to you
Sometimes we’ll agree to disagree
Sometimes you’re right, some days it’s me
But this cannot diminish you

You don’t have to defend every wrong word
Even after you find out its utterly absurd
Sometimes you might turn out to be wrong
Sometimes I’m right but we can still get along
And this will not diminish you

I shouldn’t have to defend every wrong word
Even if I do find out its utterly absurd
Sometimes I might turn out to be just wrong
About some things I thought I knew all along
And this does not diminish you

It’s really all right to have been found out
Or to find you’ve believed in something faked
If you find out something else later on
It’s fine to admit you once were wrong
And that does not diminish you

It’s really all right to have been found out
Or to find I’ve believed in something false
If I find out something else later on
It’s fine to admit I once was wrong
And that does not diminish you

True wisdom comes from learning something new
True knowledge is to know you once were wrong
Sometimes the bigger picture fills you in
Sometimes standing back you just can’t win
But that will not diminish you

True wisdom is discovering something unknown
True knowledge is finding out I could be wrong
Sometimes new information fills me in
Something new puts my argument in the bin
And that should not vindicate you

Standing by as someone does something wrong
Standing alongside them just to feel you belong
Not realizing whilst you once knew everything
Knowing how wrong that is only time can bring
And that does not diminish you

Standing by the actions of an obvious despot
Standing up for the monstrous no matter what
Not listening and learning as they speak
Not caring about the havoc they wreak
Now that does indeed diminish you

LAST TEABAG STANDING

LAST TEABAG STANDING

All alone at last
The one last teabag standing
Waiting to serve
And be served

Many thousands gone
Memories of brews gone by
Just one remains
Warm the pot

Tea time approaches
One warming final emission
It's the only
Way to go

VJ NOT VE

VJ NOT VE

Perhaps you’ll forgive
The lack of bunting flying
It’s not because
I’ve a lack of respect
For what was lost
By far too many
To save the world
From fascist tyranny
So quickly forgotten
In a self-obsessed world
Replacing hate with hope
Hoping hate would not return

Perhaps you’ll forgive
A small indulgence here
As I take you back to the not
Forgotten summer of eighty-five
Where from his armchair
Chatting to old comrades
My father made a choice
Not - yet - to celebrate
Forty years of peace
In Europe for his world war
Had been far from over yet
Raging on as peace paraded

Perhaps you’ll forgive
That sentiment you hear
As out in the Far East
He was still surrounded
By a bloody forgotten war
Still fighting on and on
In far distant jungle sweat
My father chose instead
To raise his own toast
His tumbler of whisky
On August the fifteenth
Forgotten, unremarked

So perhaps you’ll forgive
The lack of bunting flying
It brings that last summer
Of birthdays and farewells
Quiet remembrances
Now flooding back
Dad did not survive
The following October
So perhaps you’ll forgive
The lack of bunting flying
It reminds me too much
Of my father dying

THE PAPERS, 220420

THE PAPERS, 220420

The daily rags
Ignorantly ignore
Incompetences
We all abhor

Those chances missed
To save lots of lives
Due to ideologies
Many despise

Choose blind dogma
Above humanity
Though you’d never know
Over morning tea

Business exports
Of much needed kit
Some say scandalous
One word for it

Killed so many
Through political choice
Deciding factors
Get little voice

Hide the story
Behind plucky heroes
Hail hearty crafters
To hide our woes

Scream vaccine tests
Will be coming quite soon
Defend to the end
This honeymoon

Yet still flawed tests
Risk many brave lives
Mothers fathers children
Husbands and wives

Though some still choose
To weaponise distress
Managing somehow to blame
The N.H.S.

SONNET 130420

SONNET 130420

When going shopping there are golden rules
That need to be followed that is my wish
Should anyone not they’re just bloody fools
Never forget people are so selfish
People must learn that they all need to stay
One metre away then one metre more
If someone comes close keep out of their way
And preferably keep further than four
If your garden is a small postage stamp
Your neighbours outside will all be too near
So you stay indoors unless it’s quite damp
Venturing without brings far too much fear
So self-isolation is all you’ve got
Contact’s overrated like it or not

THE BEAST

THE BEAST

The beast comes calling
Culling
Eliminating
Weak and strong alike
All falling prey
To spend so much time
In suffering and woe
In next to no time
Unthinkably
Whole neighbourhoods
Suffer

The beast arriving
Coughing
Choking
Fever-fuelled fear
Now locking up
To spend endless weeks
In our homes-made cells
Next to unfamiliar
Invisible
Unseen neighbours
Coughing

The beast is ripping
Ripping
R I P-ing
Through a population
Now lining up
To spend eternity
In anonymous boxes
Next to anonymous
Unknowable
Unknown neighbours
Forever

The beast came knocking
Tearing
Causing tears
Of lamentation
Now welling up
To spend year after year
In endless speculation
Next we’ll place blame
Unfathomably
On our neighbours
Abroad
