You know, the thing that suddenly struck me today is that, when I first arrived in Newport in the autumn of 1983, the tragedy at Aberfan had only occurred seventeen years earlier, or more-or-less the same number of years as we currently are from the World Trade Center attacks, and yet back then, in those long, dark days of the miners' strike, the Aberfan disaster seemed like ancient history.
As 9/11 must now seem to some of today's 18 year-olds.
Meanwhile, there is that disconcerting sense that decades now fly by in the same way that months used to. I do sometimes think that events that were only really covered by black & white photography and television somehow seem to have occurred far longer ago than they actually did.
