GRANDAD'S SLIDES (9) - WOODEN BOX 2 - SS CANBERRA 1964 (PHOTOBLOG) GIBRALTAR

SLIDES 0128-0143

Presumably, having given my Grandfather the opportunity to photograph The Rock of Gibraltar, it was only natural that the SS Canberra would pull into Gibraltar itself and allow those passengers that hadn't frozen by the pool by hitting it almost immediately after they pulled out of Southampton to visit.

And this being the 1960s, perhaps I ought not to be surprised that Gibraltar still had a bullring, or that tourists back then, as they probably still do, are drawn to the "Traditional Entertainment" evenings and souvenir shops like bees are to pollen.

Unless, of course, it isn't Gibraltar at all...*

That archway/doorway is probably quite famous, but I don't know where it is.

Oh, and I'm reliably informed by my Special Correspondent in such matters, that pulling down your straps to get an even tan looks as common and vulgar then as it still does now ;-)

*Turns out that it isn't... Er... Welcome to Palma.

    1. You may very well be right... This lack of labelling is awkward to work with (although I'm always open to suggestions from more widely travelled folk to fill in the blanks) - they may well have sailed through the Straits and on to Malaga or Almeria or anywhere, so it is all guesswork really. There are a set from Gibraltar from 1965, so it may have skipped that stop on the first year.

    2. This could even be the Palma stop listed on the box lid... I'll have to have a rethink about where the ones I thought were Palma actually are...) :-)
