SEVEN O'CLOCK LAGER

SEVEN O’CLOCK LAGER

Seven o’clock in the morning
Queuing at the minimart checkout
He buys a four-pack of lager

Not wanting to judge
Or leap to conclusions
Although people will do that anyway

He seemed far too neat
Altogether too clean cut and alert
To be someone homeless

Trying to be kind
Not leaping to conclusions
Maybe he was buying a small gift

Perhaps buying a few beers
While he was travelling to work
To keep in the fridge all day

Trying to be kind
Not leaping to conclusions
Maybe he was planning a day out

Perhaps going fishing
Or putting together a picnic
On this blistering hot day

Not wanting to judge
Or leap to conclusions
Enough people will do that anyway

On a day like today
Refreshment would be needed
Wherever he was going

Trying to be kind
Not leaping to conclusions
Maybe he was planning a day out

Not a day in the park
Shouting at strangers
Knocking back can after can
